Annual Munch Conference: Edvard Munch and Printmaking

Press release -

Annual Munch Conference: Edvard Munch and Printmaking

The Conference, titled «Between Art and Mass Communication: Edvard Munch and Printmaking», is the third and last Conference in the Munch 150 anniversary year. The Conference is connected to The Munch Museum’s exhibition «Munch on Paper», which is dedicated to Munch’s vast oeuvre of works on paper.

Central to the November 22 conference is Munch’s activity as a printmaker: Beside presenting key images and their various techniques, the exhibition will also address Munch’s exploitation of printmaking as a medium of mass communication, touching, for example, on the concept of print portfolios such as “The Mirror.”  It will also examine the instrumentalisation of the print market through Munch’s exhibition policy of prints, as well as his network of print collectors and dealers.

The aim of this conference is to investigate these important ideas in depth and to evaluate Munch’s achievement in the area of printmaking from various angles.

The conference is open to all, and it is held at The Munch Museum on 22 November. See the whole program here.  The conference registration is at the same link.  There is a registration fee of NOK 150, for which you will be offered coffee, lunch, and a ticket to view the “Munch on Paper” exhibition.

This is the third conference sponsored and organized by the «Munch, Modernity, and Modernsim» research network at the University of Oslo, the Munch Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo. The Royal Norwegian Consulate in New York is also supporting the Conference.
