Karin Hindsbo (42) will succeed Audun Eckhoff as museum director of the National Museum for a term of six years. Hindsbo comes directly from the position as director of KODE Art Museums of Bergen. She takes over Eckhoff’s position on the 1st of June, 2017.
Lina Bo Bardi’s iconic glasshouse in São Paulo, Casa de Vidro from 1952, will be presented inside Sverre Fehn’s glass Pavilion from 2008. This juxtaposition of Bo Bardi and Fehn sets up a dialogue between two architects. The exhibition also includes new commissioned works by the German artist Veronika Kellndorfer featuring images of Casa de Vidro. The exhibition curator is Markus Richter.
The National Museum has recently carried out research on the provenance of A Man Fishing by Gustave Courbet, and uncovered reliable evidence that the museum’s painting was executed by the artist himself. This mystery is what the “Under the Microscope: Gustave Courbet” exhibition at the National Gallery is all about. The exhibition opens on 18 November and will run until 5 February 2017.

What does nature mean to you? In the exhibition “NORSK NATUR”, the Norwegian artist Toril Johannessen and the Danish artist Tue Greenfort join forces to discuss nature.
The 2016 Oslo Architecture Triennale presents two main exhibitions. The exhibition “In Residence” at the National Museum – Architecture is shown in parallel with the exhibition “On Residence” at The Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture. The two exhibitions illustrates how our sense of identity and belonging is constantly changing.
For the first time ever, an exhibition will focus on the wide-ranging Japanese influence on Nordic art and design around 1900. Works by leading Nordic artists such as Gerhard Munthe, Bruno Liljefors, Helene Schjerfbeck, and Oda Krohg will be presented alongside works by European pioneers such as Monet, Gauguin, and van Gogh. An advance viewing for the press will be held on Thursday, 16 June.
With his designs for Skansen Restaurant, Ekeberg Restaurant and the Horn Building, the architect Lars Backer brought the International Style in architecture to Norway. The exhibition “Lars Backer – architect. A pioneer of Norwegian Modernism” tells the story of Lars Backer’s life, explains his contribution to Norwegian architecture, and sheds light on the era he lived in.
Conceptual art has gained a central position in the international art canon, but has been conspicuously absent in Norwegian art history. With “Silent Revolt” the National museum aims to reassess the view of conceptual art as a vacuum in our recent history.

Villa Tugendhat (1928–30) in the Czech Republic is the most well-preserved example of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s early functionalism. It is regarded as one of the world’s most important manifestations of villa architecture and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building also likely inspired the Norwegian architect Arne Korsmo’s work on Villa Stenersen (1937–39).
