What do the Star Wars city of Coruscant, the architect Le Corbusier and the artist Robert Delaunay have in common? They were all inspired by the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778). On 9 September, the exhibition ‘Piranesi and the Modern’ will open at the National Museum in Oslo.
At the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, the Nordic Pavilion will transform into a full scale cohousing project. With the exhibition What We Share. A model for cohousing, Norwegian architects Helen & Hard supported by a curatorial team from National Museum of Norway will present a framework for building communities based on participation and sharing.
The exhibition “Poor Art – Rich Legacy: Arte Povera and Parallel Practices 1968–2015” is based on some of the most significant works from the Norwegian National Museum’s collection of contemporary art.
How have architectural theories evolved over the past two hundred years? And how have the methods and styles used by architects influenced and changed our architectural culture and history? These questions form the basis of the National Museum – Architecture’s very first permanent exhibition based on the museum’s own collection, set to open on 19 September.
The exhibition “An Appetite for Painting: Contemporary Painting 2000–2014”, set to open at the Museum of Contemporary Art on 12 September, allows the public to experience painting in the contemporary art of thirteen leading international and Norwegian artists. The exhibition will display a total of fifty-three paintings, most of which are recent works from the past three years.
The exhibition “Take Liberty!” features works by artists who express explicit and personal struggles for freedom.
In the summer of 2013, the internationally acclaimed Norwegian fine-art photographer Mette Tronvoll shot a unique photo session with Queen Sonja at Verdens Ende, a seaside landscape at the southern edge of the Oslofjord. The result of their encounter is the series Mette Tronvoll: Portraits of Queen Sonja, now on display in the National Gallery.
The exhibition Aase Texmon Rygh: Modernism Forever! is the National Museum’s first solo exhibition of works by the sculptor Aase Texmon Rygh (b. 1925), one of the first abstract modernists in Norwegian sculpture.
How does contemporary art relate to architecture and what role does art play in architecture? This is the question that will be discussed at the National Museum this autumn - in the exhibitions “Louis Kahn – The Power of Architecture” and “Inside Outside Architecture”.
«Dysthe Design. Swinging 60» honours Sven Ivar Dysthe’s 60-year career as one of Norway’s most prominent designers of the post-war era. With his international orientation, the award-winning designer has distinguished himself in Norwegian design circles. He revolutionised ski bindings and his stackable Laminette chair has achieved sales in excess of 900,000.
What characterises the present generation of young Norwegian architects and how are they positioning themselves in Norway and internationally? Who are these architects and what are their concerns? How are they creating and shaping innovative advances, and to what extent will they make their mark on the architecture of the future?
From the 1980s to the present, Norwegian video art has evolved from a marginal art form to one with a dominant position. The exhibition “PARADOX: Positions in Norwegian video art 1980–2010” presents a selection of Norwegian video art from the years 1980 to 2010. Museet for samtidskunst 15. February–18. August 2013.
This year is the 150th anniversary of Edvard Munch’s birth. Munch (1863-1944) is one of modernism’s pioneers. The anniversary year will be celebrated with the largest ever Munch exhibition in Oslo, as well as a range of cultural events in Norway and other countries to celebrate Munch and his art.

The exhibition adopts the perspective of a traveller on the road to trace connections between historical and contemporary perceptions of Norway’s nature and landscapes. Models from Peter Zumthor’s project for a zinc mine museum at Allmannajuvet and Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk’s project for the Vøringsfossen falls are on show as well as historical maps, prints and drawings, photographs and film.
